Three people died, while one was admitted to hospital, after allegedly consuming poisonous liquor in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district. Police said that local police, acting on a tip-off, reached the hospital on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, but one person had already died. Investigation is ongoing to find out the exact cause of his death.

“Acting on a tip-off that two people were undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Sitamarhi after drinking spurious liquor, the police reached the spot in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. However, by the time they reached the hospital, one person Had died. Police said in a statement, “Awadhesh Kumar has died. The exact cause of death will be known only after post-mortem.”

The police further said in their statement, “Another person, identified as Roshan Rai, is undergoing treatment in the hospital and the police is in touch with his family members.”

During the investigation of the case, the police came to know from the local people that two more people had died due to drinking poisonous liquor in the area.

“Villagers informed the police about the death of two more people in the area. However, their bodies were cremated without informing the police,” the statement said.

Police have so far arrested three people in the incident, who have been identified as Raj Nadan Sahni, Surya Pratap Sahni and Shatrughan Sahni. According to the police, about 90 bottles of liquor were also recovered from their possession.

The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar had banned the sale and consumption of liquor in the state in April 2016. However, incidents of liquor smuggling keep coming to light in the state.

In April this year, more than 30 people had died after drinking poisonous liquor in East Champaran district.
