Ralston 5th grade student raises $2,000 for bereaved teacher

The bond between a Ralston teacher and her fifth grade student is stronger than ever. Janice Rhodes is mourning her child. He died recently after battling a rare heart problem. But about a month ago, fifth grader Adriana Case stepped up to help in a big way.

It’s been almost two weeks since Rhodes lost a big part of his world. “I think about her smile. Honestly, I think about her at peace now,” Rhodes said. Their five-and-a-half-month-old son, Caden, was suffering from hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

His life was full of pain and hospital stays. He was happiest when he was outside, and he only got that for a few months,” Rhodes said. “Of the five and a half months that he was alive, he was at home for two of them.

That’s what she wants to do. “I gave her a blanket and I thought it wasn’t enough so I started a GoFundMe,” Case said. “It would just be, not like, $2,000. I thought it would be just a few hundred dollars.

With the help of her mom, Case was able to create a GoFundMe raising $2,000 for her favorite teacher.

“I thought it would be just, not like $2,000. I thought it would just be like a couple hundred dollars,” Case said.

For Rhodes, the joy of it all goes far beyond the money.

“It’s more than just what she did to show her compassion and care for others. Because she showed it for me, I know she’ll do the same for other people,” Rhodes said.

“I really love him,” Case said of Rhodes.

Rhodes said she will return to work on Monday. She said she doesn’t think she would have made it if it weren’t for her amazing students like Adriana.
