The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday issued a show cause notice to Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva over his alleged statements and social media posts against Arvind Kejriwal on Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) complaint. AAP on Monday filed a formal complaint with the ECI, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using inappropriate content on social media platforms to tarnish the reputation of its convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
After formally filing the complaint on Monday, senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha asserted, “BJP is using cheap and absurd material while trying to malign the image of our party and leader Arvind Kejriwal. They are attacking his character.” Murder”, as quoted by PTI.
Chadha stressed the importance of maintaining dignity in politics and public life. “Certain level of dignity is required in politics and public life, and if a party violates it, it reflects on the ‘sanskaar’ (values) of the party,” he said. Criticizing the BJP’s approach, Chadha urged the party to engage in political battle through elections rather than resorting to character assassination and personal attacks on Kejriwal and his family.
AAP particularly took exception to a post dated November 5, which expressed the party’s strong disapproval.
Election Commission notice to AAP on post targeting PM Modi
Last week, the Election Commission had issued a show cause notice to Kejriwal after AAP allegedly made derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on its social media platforms.
The Commission directed Kejriwal to respond to the allegation of violation of the election code of conduct by November 16. Subsequently, the next day, Raghav Chadha accused the BJP of running a defamatory and misleading campaign on social media against Kejriwal, and announced AAP’s intention to file a complaint.
